Northwest men's basketball opened the season with a strong performance against No. 22 Daemen College in a 85-65 win on day one of the Small College Basketball National Hall of Fame Classic in St. Joseph.
The Bearcats (1-0) never trailed the Wildcats (0-1) and pushed the early lead to double digits less than seven minutes into the game. The lead ballooned to 26-9 on a Diego Bernard layup with 8:44 remaining in the first half.
Daemen battled back to cut the deficit to nine points twice in the second half, but Northwest never let them get any closer.
Bernard turned in a balanced stat sheet with 19 points on 9-11 shooting, seven rebounds and six assists.
Trevor Hudgins finished the night with 24 points and seven assists. Ryan Hawkins also recorded 24 points and four rebounds.
Northwest returns to action Saturday against No. 9 Souther Nazarene at 5:30pm.
